Comfort

Every semester the visual journalism class at Shorewood High School sets out upon a reporting project in which teams of student journalists interpret a central theme. Every semester the class works to identify and expand upon one theme to unify its reporting. This semester, the fall semester of the 2020-2021 school year, we chose Comfort. Since March 13 of 2020, many students struggled to find the comfort that occasionally helps them to navigate their world. We might normally find comfort in a local coffee shop, a familiar pass time, a career in music, a favorite food, or an athletic endeavor. But this pandemic year has threatened our sense of familiarity and ease. It has challenged us all to remember what brings us comfort and how we can attain the benefits associated with it. This may be by finding comfort in adoptive families, establishing new communications among friends and loved ones, as well as in the media, or even traveling across borders to reunite with family.

Among the many accommodations the class made, one was to eschew team reporting in favor of individual projects. What normally shows up as the work of several teams comprised of three to five students, now is a display of the work of 15 individuals and one team of two. Student productions have featured the history of a house, an exploration of hygge, favorite childhood items, and the pleasure of our pets.

So please take some time, and come back often to see and hear how we reflected and reported on Comfort.
